AlgoRhythms Workshop

Overview

This workshop explores DIY electronic music-making using Pure Data. Participants will investigate algorithmic structures, effect processes, generative rhythms, and custom-built controllers. The aim is to create a shared language between embodied playing and live-coded or patch-based electronics.

Aims

To introduce participants to patch based electronics and the various options to embed patches into hardware using bela and raspberry pi
To provide hands-on skills in Pure Data for building algorithmic rhythms, generative processes, and interactive control systems.
To experiment collectively with merging acoustic/physical improvisation and electronic sound design.
To cultivate an environment where musicians of all backgrounds (acoustic, digital, experimental, electronic) can collaboratively create.

Target Audience

Musicians, sound designers, and improvisers curious about integrating electronics into their practice.
Sonic enthusiasts with little or no coding background interested in creative sound-making.
Experienced Pure Data users looking to engage with improvisation in a more embodied and conceptual way.

Session 1: Introduction to Pure Data and DIY Sonic Tools

Basics of patching in Pure Data.
Building simple sound generators and rhythmic patterns.
Strategies for creating unpredictability and “indeterminacy” in patch design.

Session 2: Custom Controllers and Interfaces

Hands-on exploration of alternative controllers (MIDI, sensors, hacked devices).
Mapping physical gestures to sound parameters.
Encouraging a closer feedback loop between improvising body and algorithms.

Session 3: Bridging the Worlds

Pairing traditional instruments with electronic sound-making.
Improvised duets and group sessions highlighting interaction between traditional playing and algorithmic systems.
Discussion of emergent dynamics and patching and composing relate

Final Session: Collective Performance & Reflection

Participants co-create and perform a short set where acoustic energy and electronics intertwine.
Group discussion on how improvisation, unpredictability, and DIY approaches shaped their practice.

Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

Gain practical tools in Pure Data for generative rhythms and interactive sound-making.
Experiment with custom controllers that blur lines between traditional instruments and digital processes.
Create collaborative performances that embody the collision between human intuition and algorithmic structures.

Duration and Format

Recommended total duration: 4 sessions of 2 hours, but can be adapted and condensed to one or two four hour sessions
Format: In-person, hands-on workshop with opportunities for both solo experimentation and group improvisation.
Requirements: Projector, sound system, participant laptops with Pure Data installed, optional acoustic instruments, and experimental controllers.
